Even if Daggers’ win over Oxford United came by one of the most fortunate of own goals, boss Wayne Burnett believed it’s what his side deserved on the balance of play.

It has not been the happiest of home grounds of late with no win at Victoria Road since New Year’s Day.

It looked like it would be another home game without a three-point return, until Luke Howell’s 89th minute shot struck Michael Raynes, then Matt Bevans before looping over a stranded Ryan Clarke in the U’s goal.

It also brought to an end the U’s spell over the Daggers, having won at Victoria Road 1-0 on the last four occasions, and though this victory came via a fortunate goal, Burnett was relieved to finally end a run of eight home games without victory.

“I am absolutely ecstatic, I am delighted that we have managed to get the win eventually,” said Burnett.

“It hasn’t been for the want of trying it was a bit fortuitous to say the least but we’ll take it anyway we can.

“We weren’t overly threatenening in front of goal, but I think we threatened their goal more than they did ours.

“We had a lot more possession and it will be interesting to see the stats. But on face value of the game I thought we were better than the opposition.”

Daggers have been on the wrong end of some late goals recently, and also in the reverse fixture at the Kassam Stadium, where Dave Kitson’s stoppage time goal saw the U’s pick up all three points.

And while the Victoria Road side haven’t had lady luck on their side lately, Burnett feels it has evened itself out over the course of the season.

“We lost it up there in injury time, but you’ll take a win anyway you can,” he added.

“I would have been gutted if it would have happened to us but it hasn’t. I think it pans out over the course of the season.

“We played Morecambe away and scored in injury time, and they have almost done the same here a few weeks back.”

Daggers went into the game off the back of a poor showing against Accrington Stanley on Tuesday, and were fortunate on that occasion to come away with a point.

But Burnett was pleased with the reaction from his side against the U’s on Saturday.

“Players need a rest, and that was evident on Tuesday night,” he remarked.

“We looked a little lethargic and lacklustre but I thought today we played with a lot more energy, a high tempo and intensity and our movement was okay at times.

“I didn’t think we performed well at all on Tuesday but today was much better. We looked a lot stronger, fitter and the rest has done us well. We’ve managed the players well over the week.”
