Dagenham & Redbridge started the new year with a bang thanks to a 2-1 win at Exeter City that could prove crucial in their bid to avoid relegation from League Two.

Having opened the scoring early on, Daggers conceded a soft equaliser two minutes before the break to give the woefully out-of-form Grecians hope heading into the second half.

While the visitors were penned back for long spells after the break, they held out well before scoring the winner with another header 16 minutes from time to give new boss John Still a winning start.

Still has changed Dagenham’s formation to a 5-3-2 as he looks to change their fortunes, and it seems to be working well with one of his wing backs in particular shining at St James Park.

Mark Cousins (6.5) - Looked competent between the sticks for much of the game and made several good saves, but could have done better when coming for the corner that led to Exeter’s goal.

Josh Passley (6.5) - Solid in attack and solid in defence without ever really threatening to get involved in the match too much. Perhaps a position where competition may be needed in the window, but not a pressing concern.

Clevid Dikamona (7) - Getting better with every match after a shaky start to his Daggers career. Playing three at the back allows Frenchman to run with ball from defence, which he clearly enjoys.

Justin Hoyte (7.5) - Swept up brilliantly as the last line of defence and made a superb goal line header to deny the hosts a late equaliser. Fantastic vision from Still to see the full back could perform well in this role.

Ayo Obileye (7) - Good defensive game from the youngster, never looked particularly troubled by the Grecians defence and his muscular strength may well have helped Daggers open the scoring at St James Park.

Ashley Hemmings (8.5) - Glorious cross for Chambers to score the second, but offered so much more than that. Performed defensive roles diligently and, like Passley, doesn’t need an invitation to go forward. Wing back probably suits all aspects of his game.

James Dunne (6) - Possibly his worst game for Daggers since joining on loan, typified by a bizarre 40-yard pass in the dying minutes that went diagonally backwards, forcing Passley to scramble to prevent it from going out of play for an attacking Exeter throw.

Frankie Raymond (6.5) - While creatively he wasn’t at his best and his passing not as crisp as it has been in the past, have to say his covering at left wing back when Hemmings charged forward was phenomenal.

Joss Labadie (7) - Perhaps a touch lucky with his goal, but he is playing like a man possessed this season. Forced off at half time, but didn’t leave St James Park limping which is a positive ahead of the FA Cup match at Everton.

Ashley Chambers (8) - Getting himself in the right places in the box, which is great to see. Has had his critics this season, but hopefully can kick on now in a more advanced role centrally with the confidence the two goals will have given him. Looks to be forming a good partnership up top.

Christian Doidge (7) - The display we’ve come to expect from the Welshman who again ran himself into the ground at Exeter, drawing praise from his new boss. Like he always does, caused the opposition defence problems when challenging for an aerial ball.

Substitutes:

Andre Boucaud for Labadie 45 (7) - Probably the most impressed I’ve been with the Trinidad international all season. Looked like a leader in the middle when taking over the armband from Labadie and charged around the pitch energetically.

Kyle Vassell for Doidge 73 (6.5) - A great impact sub to bring on with his pace and power. Drifted into the channels well in Devon.

Jamie Cureton for Chambers 76.
