Apart from one game, Daggers captain Abu Ogogo had been an ever-present in Wayne Burnett’s side until his absence from the team in the 1-0 loss to Chesterfield on Easter Monday.

The midfielder missed the league encounter at AFC Wimbledon back in November, having picked up five yellow cards up to that point.

But that aside, the 24-year-old has led by example throughout, which could push him high up the list in the Daggers Player of the Year poll, and in Burnett’s eyes, the time had come to give the ‘shattered’ skipper a rest.

“Abu has needed a rest for about four weeks, he has been on his feet,” said Burnett.

“He has led by example and he’s been absolutely outstanding in my opinion. He has been tremendous but he’s shattered and tired.

“I’ve watched the games back and it’s like he’s been on a travelator and he’s almost running in quicksand sometimes.

“But he never gives up and shows that hunger and desire. That’s why he is captain and he plays every week, but he needs the rest and he’s needed that for four or five weeks.”

Burnett also confirmed Ade Azeez missed the Chesterfield game through a thigh injury, while striker Chris Dickson was unavailable due to personal reason.
