Dagenham & Redbridge have conceded twice late on in recent weeks to be denied victory, but coming through with a 2-1 victory at Newport County is just the boost the squad needs according to first-team coach Warren Hackett.

The Daggers let slip a 2-1 lead in stoppage time at Exeter on March 8, before conceding in the 89th minute at home to Morecambe on Saturday.

And last night Medy Elito’s first half double put them in front at Rodney Parade, though Robbie Willmott pulled one back on the stroke of half time.

And despite plenty of second half pressure from the Exiles, the visitors held on to extend their unbeaten run to five games.

“It’s not a great time to concede in any minute of the game but just before half time isn’t great,” said Hackett.

“A 2-0 lead would have certainly settled the game down in the second half but it was 2-1 and they have got the wind in their sails.

“They’ve thrown the kitchen sink at us as you would expect them to.

“Of course, physcologically we don’t want to get in a position where we are winning 2-1 and in the last minute we concede but physcoligically today they stuck to their guns, didn’t panic and we got the right result.”

There were plenty of chances in the opening period for the visitors in a half they dominated.

And the one small disappointment on the night for Hackett was that they had only managed had a one-goal lead at the break.

“I would say we probably created about seven or eight chances,” added Hackett.

“And in a way we are 2-1 up at half time and we are looking at and we could have potentially been 4-0 up at the break which would have been great, but it wasn’t to be.”

Special praise was reserved for goal hero Elito, but the Daggers coach was more than pleased with the performance of Billy Bingham in front of a strong back four.

“Medy is going through a great vein of form at the moment, he scored last time out and two in this one and he’s given us that extra bit of class that we need right now,” said Hackett.

“The centre halves defended very well, but not just them, the midfielders in front of them did as well.

“Billy Bingham played in that holding midfield role today and he knew what he’s responsibilities were, just to sit in front of the back four and to clear those balls coming into the box.”
