Daggers goalkeeper Chris Lewington hopes the long-awaited win over Rochdale on Saturday can help them start to look back up the table and get back in the play-off hunt.

Results haven’t gone as anyone would have liked of late with the weekend victory their first since New Year’s Day, though the signs had been positive in recent draws with fellow promotion contenders Scunthorpe and Southend.

That all changed on Saturday though with a fine 1-0 win at Rochdale thanks to Rhys Murphy’s 13th goal of the season, which moved them eight points shy of Burton Albion in seventh – the final play-off spot.

And though that is still a large margin to overhaul, with others also having games in hand, Lewington feels anything is possible if the Daggers can put together a winning streak.

“We have got a really good team here and though it hadn’t quite gone right over the festive period, I feel confident we have the squad that is capable of closing that gap,” said Lewington.

“You have got to have targets in football otherwise there is no point playing. We’ve been playing well and the points over Scunthorpe and Southend were good, plus this win proves we have got what it takes.”

The Daggers defence on their travels this season has been nowhere near as solid as it has been at Victoria Road.

They have conceded 24 on the road – the joint highest in the league with York – yet at home only two teams have let in less.

But there was little sign of that less than watertight defence at the weekend in a strong showing all round, with Lewington pulling off several solid saves throughout the contest.

“I’m really happy with the clean sheet,” added Lewington.

“It was always going to be tough against a top side like them and they make it difficult here so to get the victory and the three points is brilliant.

“In the first half I thought we got tested a bit, but we defended really well and we looked solid as a unit from 1-11 so that was good.

“It’s always hard travelling away from home with different surroundings and pitches as well as the different obstacles that are put in our way but today I thought we deserved the three points.”
