Dagenham & Redbridge manager Peter Taylor admits his phone has constantly been ringing in his first week in charge at the club.

The Daggers appointed Taylor alongside Terry Harris last week and the boss is already working on a building a squad for the 2018/19 National League season.

The former England caretaker manager has revealed conversations have started already with agents and players.

“The phone’s working again, when you’re out of work you don’t seem to get too many phone calls, but it has certainly been nice and busy,” he said.

“It’s been about getting to know everybody, speaking to lots of agents, speaking a lot about our players and of course speaking to players that we hope might end up joining us.”

Taylor admits making sure they get the right players in will prove vital as the National League is a tricky competition.

“The National League is a tough league and we’re going to be a much younger team this year, so you need to get the right kind of player who is going to come in and handle the situation,” he added.

“At the minute I’m just really talking and trying to make sure we get the right recruitment.

“You can appreciate there is lots of people who ring you up and ask you to look at their players or consider their players.

“Certain ones I know so they go high on the list and certain ones I don’t know, but we will then get them in for trials.

“Sometimes trials work out to be successful.”

Taylor also revealed he is pleased with their pre-season fixtures, including games against a West Ham United XI and League Two outfit Colchester United that were announced earlier this week.

“That was all organised before we got here, to be fair,” Taylor said.

“I think Darren (Currie) and Junior (Lewis) got those underway and we’ve had to let a couple of teams down because we haven’t got the players to play two games in two nights.

“But the six matches we’ve got I think are really good fixtures. Three at home, which should be good.”

The former Gillingham boss also believes pre-season is the time to build the foundations for the season, adding: “It’s very important you’ve got to get to know each other, you’ve got to get fit and you’ve got to get organised.”
