Dagenham & Redbridge have completed the signing of midfielder Anthony Edgar on a non contract basis.

The 23-year-old has been without a club since being released by Barnet in April, but has spent the last few weeks training with the Daggers with a view of signing a deal at Victoria Road.

And after impressing, manager Wayne Burnett has decided to give the former West Ham youngster a chance, and could go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home match against Burton Albion.

But Burnett revealed, such is Edgar’s desire to get back into the game, that he will not take a wage while he is at the club, with no more money available for the Daggers boss.

“We knew he was available so we brought him in for training over the last two to three weeks and he has impressed,” said Burnett.

“All credit to him for playing for nothing. If he gets an opportunity and does well he’ll be in a strong position. You don’t see it often these days but such is his hunger to play football he won’t get a penny as there is no more money available in our budget.”

During his time with the Hammers, he spent a spell on loan at Bournemouth, before being released in 2011. Edgar went on to join Yeovil on a one-year deal, though his stay at Huish Park lasted just one season and made just 10 appearances for the club.

Edgar, a cousin of former Hammer Jermain Defoe, then impressed enough to earn a deal at Barnet, but his time there was brief as well, making only 11 appearances for the Bees before being released.

And for a 23-year-old, who will wear the number 19 shirt at the Daggers with plenty of potential, Burnett feels he hasn’t played as many games as he should have.

“For someone of his age he hasn’t played a lot football. He has the ability to go past players, we’ve seen that in training,” he added. “He’s shown a great attitude and work ethic and as I said if he gets in the team he’s putting himself in the shop window.”
