Burnett sure his side will go to Whaddon Road confident

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett insists his team will visit Cheltenham Town in good spirits, despite three successive defeats in League Two.

Daggers were beaten 3-0 on Tuesday night at Portsmouth and although the final scoreline flattered the hosts, it is now three games without a point after losses to Cambridge United and Northampton Town prior to that.

However, Burnett believes his side hasn’t been playing poorly and they’ll return to Whaddon Road with positive memories, after defeating Cheltenham 3-2 in May on the final day of the League Two season.

He said: “I think the boys have been in good spirits lately and the important thing for me is we haven’t been playing poorly.

“We have been conceding goals, yes we have and we need to stop that, but we have been playing ok and if we can stop the individual errors I can see us hopefully going on a run.

“If we were playing poorly and getting beat I would be concerned but we are playing ok, and as I say, it is individual errors at the moment costing us. We need to concentrate and be better as a group and overcome that.”

Although Daggers have lost their last three, Cheltenham aren’t in much better form themselves and have failed to score in their last three outings.

Burnett knows today’s contest will be between two teams not playing to their optimum but is hoping the Victoria Road outfit can tighten up at the back and keep a clean sheet this afternoon.

“Cheltenham have been beat on Tuesday (1-0 to Southend) and we have been beaten so it is two teams who aren’t firing on all cylinders,” Burnett acknowledged.

“Hopefully we can go there and get a positive reaction after the defeat on Tuesday night. We would like to go there and get a clean sheet but it has been individual errors and sometimes you can’t legislate for that.

“Ultimately I pick the team so I am responsible and we need to eradicate those errors and if we do that we will be ok.”

Mark Cousins is expected to keep his place in the Daggers goal and Scott Doe could also feature for Burnett’s team after he trained this week.

Young forward Christian Doidge has also returned to training this week, though the Daggers boss believes it will be a little while before he is ready for first team action.

Burnett added: “Scott didn’t quite make it on Tuesday. He has trained but is he going to be ready for Cheltenham? We aren’t quite sure yet.

“Doigs trained, he has trained for three or four days but he has been out for a while so it will take him a while to get back but he will be a good addition to our group.”
