Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett was pleased to see his side get up and running in League Two with a 2-0 win at Hartlepool on Tuesday.

A goal in each half from midfielders Luke Howell and Abu Ogogo saw the Daggers pick up their first points of the season against the Pools, and Burnett felt his side fully warranted the victory in the north east.

“It’s nice to be off the mark and it was a very good, professional performance from us,” said Burnett.

“Hartlepool are a decent side and their position in the table isn’t a fair reflection of their ability.”

It was almost the perfect start when Howell found the net after just five minutes, and the Victoria Road chief was pleased the midfielder took his chance, having spurned a similar one at Burton on Saturday.

“He took up a similar position this time and it was nice to see him get a shot away,” he added.

“It was a good finish although it took a slight deflection.

“We had a few more chances than them in the first half, but in the second they upped their game and were always going to have chances.

“They had plenty of corners but we stuck to the task, were resilient and dealt with the situations well.”

Striker Jamie Cureton wasn’t on target like he had been in the previous two games, but provided both goals.

And even though Burnett expected the experienced frontman to have an impact at the club, he has been plesantly surprised by the 38-year-old.

“He is a clever player and he has a great work ethic,” he added. “It has surprised me how hard he works, but he’s been a good player for a number of seasons now.

“He’s got off to a great start here, but there may come a time when we may have to protect him a little.”
