Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett is hoping to secure a deal for striker Jamie Cureton soon.

The 38-year-old has impressed in several pre-season games for the Daggers, and despite interest from elsewhere, the Victoria Road chief was optimistic of the experienced front man making the switch.

“We are looking at securing Jamie’s services for the season and it would be a big boost for us,” said Burnett.

“His fitness is good and I don’t doubt he could last the whole 90 minutes of a match.

“He is still a top player and though he may not be able to play all 46 league games in the season he will be a vital part of our team.

“The family home is local as well and I am sure that has played a part in his decision as well, and he definitely enhances the group we already have at the club.”

Burnett has trimmed down the number of trialists he has used after the disappointing 4-0 loss at Ebbsfleet United on Saturday, and with the new season in mind, hopes to have his squad complete by the time the Daggers host Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in their final pre-season match on August 2.

“The season isn’t too far away now and I am mindful of that with the trialists,” added Burnett.

“Ideally I would like to have another striker and a couple of wingers to the squad, That’s been the area of priority for some time now but we have been in discussions with a few and hopefully we’ll have the squad in place by the Spurs friendly.

One player who won’t be returning now is Affy Obafemi, who has since gone on trial with Welling, Maidstone and Dulwich Hamlet, while long-term trialist Alan Connell doesn’t feature in Burnett’s plans any more.

Next week the Daggers will also take a look at Carmarthen Town striker Chris Doidge, and he will feature in two friendlies next week.

Doidge was brought to the attention of Burnett after he netted 19 goals for the Welsh side last season.

“He’ll be coming in on Monday and we will have a look at him,” said the Daggers boss.

“He has scored quite a few goals last season at a decent level and he was brought to our attention. They’ll be one or two others as well.”
