Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett believed his side were never at the races against Northampton Town as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat on Saturday.

A first half double from Marc Richards proved their undoing, and though they improved in the second period, they were unable to get a way back into the game.

And although Burnett believes it’s impossible to play well every week, he still expected more from his side at the weekend.

“I don’t expect us to play brilliant every week but what I do expect is for us to be more difficult to play against and more competitive and we weren’t at the weekend,” said Burnett.

“Goals change games and they’ve scored two of them and they have been better than us in the first half.

“There was improvement in the second half but we just couldn’t find that goal.

“It’s difficult when you give teams two goal starts, we had a go and worked hard. We passed it okay at times but we need to be better.”

Injuries left the Daggers short of numbers for the bench on Saturday, and they included Academy youngster Mason Bloomfield in the six that were listed.

The striker was introduced late on for his first senior appearance and while delighted to include the 17-year-old, Burnett believes that shows the gulf between the Daggers and Northampton Town.

“I’m not making any excuses because we have been beaten by a better and stronger team but we’ve brought on a young lad who is 17 who has made his debut and I think that might be the difference in squads a little bit,” he added.

“He was chuffed and they can bring on the likes of O’Toole and we are bringing on a young lad who has played in a youth team game this morning. We didn’t have enough players to cover the bench but it is a positive that we are still producing players at this club and hopefully there will be a few more come through.”
