Daggers get home tie against non-league Tamworth or Southport in FA Cup

First-team coach Darren Currie admits it is a good draw for the club

Dagenham & Redbridge will host either Conference North Tamworth or Conference Premier Southport in the FA Cup first round.

Daggers dropped to 21st in the League Two table at the weekend despite a 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers, who were top of the table before Saturday’s match.

But they will have a great opportunity to progress past the first round of the FA Cup for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign, when they reached the third round.

In the previous two season they have gone out after suffering 3-0 and 4-0 defeats to Bristol City and Bournemouth respectively, teams that were plying their trade in League One at the time.

Southport host Tamworth this evening to decide who will visit Victoria Road to go up against Wayne Burnett’s men.

Daggers played both teams during their successful 2006/07 season when they earned promotion to the Football League from the Conference Premier.

Burnett’s side have also played Southport before in the FA Cup at home and beat them 1-0 in the 2001/02 campaign.

The tie will be played over the weekend of November 7/8.

Darren Currie admitted it is a good draw for the club but he won’t be taking either non-league side for granted.

“It is a good draw, but having said that we played a team in the lower level or beneath us in Barkingside and they have showed how uncomfortable that can be,” admitted Daggers assistant manager.

“It is a difficult tie, they always are, and Southport or Tamworth will come here and enjoy playing on our surface.

“They will want to get one over us and get a giantkilling, as they call it.

“It will be a difficult game, there is no doubt about it, and we need to be 100% at it to come through that tie.”
