Mark Cousins admitted Dagenham & Redbridge rode their luck at times against Southend United yesterday, but was pleased with the point.

Wayne Burnett’s side dropped into the bottom two following the stalemate at Roots Hall, but did pick up a sixth clean sheet in all competitions this season against the Blues.

The 27-year-old was happy to help his team pick up a vital point on the road.

“A clean sheet is a very good positive for the team,” said Cousins.

“It was a bit disappointing that we did start off like we did at the start of the second half and I was busy.

“It was similar to the game on Boxing Day against Stevenage, but sometimes you get that little bit of luck.

“I think that went for me with the saves and we rode our luck but that is what you need at times.”

Cousins was in excellent form at Roots Hall, making four saves in particular to deny Barry Corr and Jack Payne.

Corr tested the Daggers keeper twice inside the box from close range, before Payne had two efforts blocked – one tipped brilliantly over the bar.

Cousins was also on the receiving end in the 70th minute when Cian Bolger clattered into him late from a corner.

The Southend defender received a red card moments afterwards for head butting Joss Labadie, but the away keeper didn’t even realise.

“I think there was an altercation afterwards, that is why he got sent off,” said Cousins.

“I didn’t actually realise they had a red card because I was on the floor in agony at the time.”

The dismissal didn’t affect the course of the game, and Daggers held on for a valuable away point.
