Daggers still interested in Cureton, says boss Burnett

Daggers boss Wayne Burnett is still interested in signing Jamie Cureton despite reports emerging he was close to rejoining Cheltenham Town

The 38-year-old was initially released by the Robins at the end of last season despite scoring 11 goals for the fellow League Two side.

He didn’t travel with the Daggers on their pre-season training camp to Spain, and instead played for the Robins against Evesham United on Saturday and it was reported he was close to agreeing a deal wih the Whaddon Road side, which would see him take a pay cut to stay in Gloucestershire.

But Burnett confirmed his willingness to look at Cureton once again in either tonight’s friendly with Wealdstone or tomorrow’s trip to Cheshunt.

“They’ll be a mix of trialists at both games,” said Burnett. “But Jamie will feature in one of the two games for us. He’s an exceptional player and we’ll continue to look at him.”

Others the Daggers boss will continue to look at are Nabil Guedioura, David Fitzpatrick and Alan Connell, while a new name in the mix is former Leyton Orient and Rochdale winger George Porter.

Porter left the O’s to join then Championship side Burnley, but it never quite worked out for the 22-year-old.

But it could be the end of the line for Gozie Ugwu, who failed to take up his invite to pre-season training with the Daggers this week, and featured for Oxford United at the weekend in their friendly with Farnborough.

“Gozie was meant to turn up for pre-season training this week and didn’t, but there’s not a great deal we can do about that,” he added.

“These are the obstacles in our way and if we are trying to compete with Oxford financially then there’s a big difference.”

Jon-Paul Pittman and Connell went with the Daggers to Spain, but it could be the end of the line for the former, with a deal more likely for Connell.
