Daggers turn down bid for striker Murphy

Dagenham & Redbridge have confirmed they turned down an offer from Barnsley for striker Rhys Murphy.

Murphy finished last season as the Daggers top goalscorer with 13, despite missing the final two months of the season due to injury.

At this moment in time the 23-year-old is still recovering form surgery on his hips, and while his recovery has gone as well as possible having met with a specialist last week, boss Wayne Burnett confirmed he would miss the start of the season, with the possibility of a return in September.

“Hopefully Rhys will be back in September, he’s been a major miss for us but it is what it is,” said Burnett .

“His visit to the specialist went well and he can step up his recovery now. It will be September before he starts playing though as there is no point rushing him back too soon.”

The Daggers accepted a bid last January from League One side Peterborough United, but Murphy turned down the move after visiting the London Road club.

However, the former Arsenal man only has a year left on his current contract with the Daggers, having signed at Victoria Road last summer after leaving Dutch Division Two side Telstar.

Barnsley, relegated to League One at the end of last season, are in the market for a striker having sold Chris O’Grady to Championship side Brighton for an undisclosed fee earlier today.

But the Tykes’ bid for the Daggers front man was turned down and it remains to be seen whether the Yorkshire side come back in with an improved offer, however, they have since bought last season’s League Two goalscorer Sam Winnall from Scunthorpe United.
