A fine first half double from Medy Elito helped Daggers extend their unbeaten run away from home to five games.

Elito made it four goals in as many appearances, though Chris Zebroski saw a penalty struck the bar.

Robbie Willmott reduced the arrears just before the break, and the Daggers spent much of the second half on the back foot.

Manager Wayne Burnett was also sent to the stands after words with referee Charles Breakspear at half time

But for all the second half pressure, County failed to test Lewington too much and the visitors held on for the victory, while Justin Edinburgh’s side saw captain David Pipe sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

Daggers made two changes from the side which drew 1-1 at home to Morecambe at the weekend with Lawson D’Ath and Billy Bingham in for Luke Howell and Ashley Chambers.

The early pressure came from the hosts, however the Daggers took the lead with a well-worked free-kick on nine minutes.

Elito picked the ball up and produced a lovely chip over the onrushing Ian McLaughlin in the Newport goal to give the visitors the perfect start.

That was the start of a dominant spell for Burnett’s side and inside a minute Luke Norris produced a fine turn and shot which was blocked by the legs of McLoughlin, and then saw a customary long-range effort strike the top of the crossbar.

McLoughlin looked uneasy in the home goal and fumbled another Norris effort behind as the Daggers remained on top.

The hosts weathered that storm and forced several corners as they worked their way back into the game.

Willmott forced Lewington to tip over when he spotted the ‘keeper of his line and minutes later another corner was handled in a crowded penalty area by Luke Norris.

Much to his amazement referee Breakspear pointed to the spot, but Zebroski thundered the spot kick against the bar in a let off for the Daggers.

And they made the most of that as they doubled their lead two minutes before the break when Azeez’s shot was blocked, but it fell kindly into the path of Elito.

The in-form winger took a touch away from the covering defender before slotting past McLoughlin at his near post.

But the half wasn’t over and deep into stoppage time Willmott pulled one back for the hosts when his 35-yard free-kick bounced in front of Lewington and the ball looped over the ‘keeper to give Newport a lifeline.

Burnett was sent off for a protest to referee Breakspear at the end of the half and it seemed as though it was going to be a long, long half for the Daggers.

They were having to soak up plenty of pressure, but they were doing just that, with Burnett sat at the back of the stand behind the goal Daggers were defending.

Lee Minshull saw an effort creep just wide of the target, while Ryan Burge flashed one past Lewington’s near post.

For all the pressure Lewington wasn’t really forced to make a save, but substitute Adam Chapman came the closest to netting an equaliser for the hosts.

A ball though fell nicely to him in the box but he slotted just wide of an onrushing Lewington.

Home skipper David Pipe was sent off for a second bookable offence after bringing down Norris just inside the Daggers half, and the visitors would have to see out four additional minutes.

But they did just that and picked up their second 2-1 away win in succession and give their play-off hopes a big, big boost.
