Assistant boss feels Daggers player anticipating movement of experienced forward more now

Warren Hackett believes Dagenham & Redbridge’s players are starting to understand the runs Jamie Cureton makes and that has helped the 39-year-old get back to his goalscoring best over the past two months.

Cureton has scored six goals in his last eight matches to help Wayne Burnett’s side move away from the relegation places in League Two and earn himself a nomination for Sky Bet player of the month in February.

He missed out on that accolade, but prior to his goal on January 31 against former club Cheltenham Town, he had gone seven matches without finding the net.

The experienced striker felt at the time he wasn’t getting too many opportunities, but he is now and is reminding us of his finishing prowess.

He scored the opening goal at Prenton Park on Saturday with Ashley Hemmings and Billy Bingham also on target in the 3-2 success against Tranmere Rovers.

“The first one is textbook Jamie Cureton. He drops his shoulder and gets beyond defenders,” said Hackett when discussing Daggers opening goal.

“We have seen it over the years many times and he does it over and over again.

“The players are starting to anticipate what he is going to do a little bit more now and get the ball over the top and get him in a little bit more often.”

That has definitely been noticeable recently with Cureton’s goals at York City and Tranmere coming from measured balls over the top.

Hemmings assisted the opener on Saturday and might have created another when he played his team mate through in the 66th minute.

Surprisingly Cureton failed to find the net when put one-on-one and instead lifted the ball over the bar.

Hackett added: “I think the changing point could have been Jamie’s opportunity when he went clean through.

“At 4-1 it would have been very difficult for them to spring more attacks on us, but at 3-1 there was still hope and fair play to Tranmere they threw the kitchen at us, as you would expect them to do because they are in precarious position.

“Two wins in a week certainly has taken the pressure off but we are not silly to think we are clear of it yet we just need to carry on winning football matches and see where it takes us until the end of the season.”
