Ashley Hemmings ended last season on loan with League Two play-off finalists Burton Albion, but hopes to go one better this term with Dagenham & Redbridge.

The 23-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Daggers last week after finding himself released by League One outfit Walsall.

Hemmings knew the loan spell away may have signalled the end of his time with the Midlands outfit, but he featured on five occasions for the Brewers during their unsuccessful promotion bid.

And having been part of that play-off push for Gary Rowett’s side, he hopes to have a big role to play for the Daggers as they look to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish.

“I was there for the last month or two of the season and they were important games because they were going for promotion,” said Hemmings.

“They was just unlucky in the final, but hopefully they’ll come back stronger. We’ve got them in a couple of weeks and it will be good to go there and see a few of the faces, but it would be even better to get a result there.

Hemmings added: “The players at Daggers have all been positive and having just missed out last season, we’ll be going for it even more. Consistency is a big part in this league and if we can do that we’ll be up there again.”

Heralding from the Midlands, Hemmings has come up against new Daggers team-mate Joss Labadie on a number of occasions.

The former Walsall man started his career with Wolves, while Labadie was at West Bromwich Albion, and the duo were often facing each other in reserve team and youth football.

And having a familiar face or two was definitely beneficial when Hemmings first arrived on trial at Victoria Road.

“I know Joss from when he was in the youth team at West Brom and we used to play against each other.

“I knew a couple other players, but I’ve felt comfortable and they have all welcomed me with open arms. I feel confident and comfortable already.”
