Darren Currie hailed the performance of Ashley Hemmings after he helped inspire Daggers to a crucial win against Cheltenham Town.

Wide man Hemmings was in sensational form throughout at Victoria Road and terrorized Robins’ Lloyd Jones all game.

He scored the decisive second goal, after Jamie Cureton’s 54th minute penalty rebound had been cancelled out by Jack Dunn’s spot-kick eight minutes later.

It gave Wayne Burnett’s team more impetus and allowed them to comfortably see out the victory with Alex Jakubiak adding a third in stoppage time.

A two-goal victory did not flatter Daggers and Hemmings’ potential was talked up.

“The way he played second half, if he plays like that consistently he won’t be at this level long,” Currie said.

“It was a brilliant bit of skill for his goal. He’s travelling at speed, chopping and turning direction. He eventually earns a little bit of space to get it on his left foot and hits it brilliantly, with so much power it doesn’t give the keeper a chance.

“You could see he was playing well enough up until his goal, but he went on again afterwards and was a real danger man.”

Although Hemmings was undoubtedly the standout performer, it wasn’t a one-man show for Daggers.

Every player showed great intent going forward and the energy of Jakubiak nicely complemented Cureton.

Luke Howell, starting again on the right side of midfield, put in another shift and it didn’t go unnoticed.

“When you have a wide man with Ashley’s ability what is asked of you is end product, crosses, shots and taking the full back on,” added Currie.

“But credit to someone like Luke on the other side. He isn’t an out-and-out winger, but he gives us a different type of performance with his energy, work rate and commitment.

“He does the simple things so well, so credit goes to him as well on the other side. They can all take credit, but certainly with someone like Ashley we all want to see what he did against Cheltenham more often because we know that is what he is capable of.”

If Hemmings can keep up his current form between now and the end of the season it will go someway to helping Daggers move themselves further away from the bottom two.

But the balance of the team is also crucial and it seems Burnett may have found his winning formula.
