Ashley Hemmings was happy with his goal at Tranmere Rovers, but also mightily relieved Janoi Donacien missed a chance in injury time to equalise and potentially ruin his and Dagenham & Redbridge’s day.

Everything was going well for Wayne Burnett’s side when Hemmings and Billy Bingham scored early in the second half to give themselves a 3-1 lead, after Jamie Cureton’s opener had been cancelled out by Rovers Danny Gardner.

But Max Power reduced the arrears three minutes from time for Micky Adams side and they came close to levelling in stoppage time at Prenton Park.

Rob Taylor crossed in from the left and Donacien, who had run off Hemmings, met the ball at the back post, but smashed over the bar from close range with almost the whole goal to aim at.

Daggers’ winger was relieved the Tranmere full-back, on loan from Aston Villa, fired off target and that the full time whistle shortly followed to give Burnett’s team a 3-2 away success.

“It was definitely a heart in mouth moment and it was my man as well so when I saw it go over I was very happy with that,” said Hemmings

“It is always good to go away and get the three points. We grafted for the whole 90 minutes and Tranmere played really well.

“They put us on the back foot for the last 20 minutes and I am happy we got the three points.”

Daggers’ goals at Prenton Park were of the highest quality, and the hosts’ two strikes by Gardner and Power were also classy.

Hemmings effort with the outside of his left foot was arguably the best of the encounter, but his assist for Cureton’s opener also pleased the 24-year-old.

He added: “All of the goals were great. I am really happy with mine and getting the assist as well so it was a game of good goals.

“When I came inside I thought this is my chance to shoot with the outside of my left foot so I did it and I was just happy to see it go in. That is all I want - to get goals, assists and help us win.

“The last 20 minutes Tranmere came at us, but we stayed strong and we stopped them from getting the draw and that was a great result for us.”
