League Two: Gillingham 2 Dagenham & Redbridge 1

Femi Ilesanmi’s first goal in his Daggers career went unrewarded as they lost out 2-1 to promotion hopefuls Gillingham in an encouraging performance from John Still’s side.

Still stuck with the side that won 1-0 over Cheltenham Town and the first real opportunity of the game came when some nice work from Daggers skipper Abu Ogogo saw him move into the box before seeing a shot blocked behind for a corner with 14 minutes on the clock.

But from a moment of controversy, the Gills took the lead on 28 minutes.

A ball into the box fell to Leon Legge, who looked to be in an offside position, saw the defender smash the ball home.

But the referee’s assistant had the flag up for the offside only to be overruled by Iain Williamson.

As the half drew to a close a great bit of skill from Femi Ilesanmi saw him win the ball in the hosts half, run towards goal only for his cross shot to miss the target.

The Gills had been warned but after the break Ilesanmi finally broke his goalscoring duck in Daggers colours with a fine finish on 52 minutes.

He produced another one of his rampaging runs down the wing came inside and saw his cross blocked.

But it fell invitingly for the left back and he fired first time low past Stuart Nelson to stun the home crowd.

For the hosts Charlie Lee arrived late into the box on 66 minutes and directed Fish’s delivery just wide of the far post.

However just a minute later the Gills retook the lead when Lewington brought down Anton Robinson and received a yellow card for his troubles.

Deon Burton, just brought on, sent the Daggers keeper the wrong way and fired the hosts back in front.

Green and Jake Caprice came on for the Daggers and the former made a worthwhile contribution.

His free-kick into the box was headed goalwards by Wilkinson but it fell just wide of the goal.

The play was all Daggers and the ball was cleared off the line when goalkeeper Stuart Nelson came out and got nowhere near a cross and Williams fired wide in another good opportunity for the visitors.

Dagenham & Redbridge: Lewington, Hoyte (Reed 90+2), Doe, Wilkinson, Ilesanmi, Elito (Caprice 75), Howell, Ogogo, Saunders (Green 79), Strevens, Williams.

Unused substitutes: Seabright, Maher, Woodall, Bingham.

Attedance: 5,611 (228 Daggers fans)
