Daggers defender played first half in 4-1 loss in Drammen

Dagenham & Redbridge defender Jack Connors played 45 minutes last night for Republic of Ireland under-21’s but couldn’t prevent them losing 4-1 to Norway in an international friendly in Drammen.

Connors played the first half for Noel King’s team before he was substituted at the break for Tottenham Hotspur youngster Kenneth McEvoy, who is currently on loan at Peterborough United.

Mohamed Elyounoussi opened the scoring for Norway after 27 minutes and Veton Berisha extended their advantage six minutes later.

That was the end of the scoring in the first period but the Daggers defender could only watch his team mates conceded two more in the second half from the subs bench.

Petter Strand grabbed Norway’s third eight minutes into the second period before Kristoffer Normann Hansen curled in a fourth.

Preston North End’s Alan Browne reduced the arrears in the 76th minute when he converted from the penalty spot but it failed to prevent a heavy defeat.

Manager King admitted afterwards the match was a learning curve for Connors and his team mates.

RTE Sport quoted the under-21 boss, he said: “We’re here to learn and we certainly did that.

“The purpose of games like this is to try out things, experimental and look at players.

“I know we can do better. It’s obviously disappointing to lose but the positive was that we worked hard right to the end and there was some good individual performances.”

Connors is set to fly back to Heathrow today before boarding another flight to Manchester to link up with the Daggers squad ahead of tomorrow’s League Two match against Accrington Stanley.
