Dagenham & Redbridge certainly had their fair share of shots in the 1-0 loss to Maidstone United last night, but the lack of potency in front of goal is not a worry for manager Wayne Burnett at this early stage.

Statistics revealed his side had 27 shots on goal, but despite fielding several triallists up front – Jon-Paul Pittman, Alan Connell, Gozie Ugwu, Jamie Cureton, David Fitzpatrick and Nabil Guedioura – they were unable to find a way past Maidstone goalkeeper Lee Worgan.

And in the end Jack Parkinson’s 22nd minute strike was enough for the Ryman Premier outfit to take victory on the night.

And despite firing a blank, Burnett was pleased with the workout.

“As I have said before results are irrelevance,” said Burnett. “Just looking at the stats and we had 27 shots. You have that amount in a game and normally you are going to score goals.

“But they were not on target or and we wasn’t clinical enough tonight, but it was still a good workout.

“I thought we passed it okay at times as was our movement. It was another 90 minutes under our belts.”

Luke Howell came off in the first half after a slight tweak of his thigh, but Burnett revealed he was taken off as a precaution before they head to Spain for their pre-season trip tomorrow.

Cureton came off in the second half, and linked up well with Connell for the most part, but the Daggers boss expected nothing less from the 38-year-old striker.

Burnett started with David Fitzpatrick as part of a forward three and he was pleased with the performance of the Southport man

“He’s got fantastic movement and is very clever player,” he added. “You can tell why he has gone for scored so many goals because of his movement and why he went for £1 million.

“Dave came on and did all right - the dribbler. He showed some good ability and skills so we’ll have another closer look at him. We are done defensively and in midfield now so it’s just wide players and forwards.”
