Daggers go to Stevenage tomorrow looking to move further away from the relegation places

Dagenham & Redbridge stopper Mark Cousins knows exactly what to expect from Graham Westley’s Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium this weekend.

The 28-year-old is expecting a battle with a Boro side pushing to get into the play-offs.

Wayne Burnett’s team are concentrating on accumulating enough points to guarantee their survival this season, but the Daggers number one is confident they can be successful tomorrow (Saturday).

“We know what Graham Westley teams play like,” said Cousins.

“We need to stand up to them firstly and compete with them, but there is nothing stopping us from getting a result.

“We were very poor in the game on Boxing Day (a 2-0 loss), but we have turned it around since then and we are on a good run now.”

The meeting back in December was a disappointing day for the club and Daggers were booed off afterwards.

Cousins concedes the players didn’t do Burnett or the club justice that day with a lacklustre display, but is confident they can put it right this weekend.

“We let ourselves down that day. We let the manager down and the whole club with the way we performed,” he added.

“But the good thing about football is you always have another game to put it right and we have done that.

“We have been on a very good run since losing against Stevenage, so there is nothing stopping us from getting a result there this weekend.”

It has been hard to explain exactly why Daggers form has “transformed” since they lost to Stevenage at Victoria Road on Boxing Day.

But Cousins believes the players’ belief was boosted after drawing 0-0 with Southend United and beating Bury 1-0 either side of New Year.

Manager Burnett has been able to pick a more consistent team ever since and Cousins added: “The confidence we took from drawing with Southend and beating Bury – two teams who were in the play-off places at the time – helped.

“Partnerships all over the pitch started to develop after that Southend game. From January onwards Scott Doe and Ayo Obileye have formed a good partnership and Billy Bingham and Andre Boucard in the middle.

“We started to get a good core of the team and when you have that everyone starts to thrive.”

Such form in 2015 has eased relegation fears, but Cousins admits the players are still focused.

“A couple of wins should make us pretty safe, but until we do that we can’t take anything for granted,” he said.
