Dagenham & Redbridge have parted ways midfielder Matt Saunders’ contract at the club.

The 24-year-old has been with the Victoria Road side since February 2012, but his playing time has been curtailed by several injuries, meaning he only made 46 appearances for the Daggers in that time.

He initially signed from Fulham, but after scoring a free-kick against Bradford City in March of that season, he injured his ankle and wasn’t seen on the pitch again until a 2-0 loss to Southend United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in October 2012.

He went on to make 34 appearances in the 2012-13 season, and had signed a new deal which would keep him at Daggers until the summer of 2015. But again injuries to his ankle seriously affected his availability and he only made six appearances – the last of which came in the 1-0 home defeat to Chesterfield on April 21.

And though there was a year left to run on his contract, Daggers boss Wayne Burnett has opted to allow the midfielder to leave, with Saunders not featuring in his plans for next season.

Saunders’ departure leaves the Daggers squad very thin, with just 10 players definitely at Victoria Road next season. That doesn’t include the likes of Gavin Hoyte, Zavon Hines, Ian Gayle and Bradley Goldberg, who have all been offered new deals.
