Morecambe leave it late to snatch victory from Daggers

Two goals in the space of three minutes saw Daggers grab defeat from the jaws of victory against Morecambe for the second time this season.

Dagenham had led 1-0 at the Globe Arena earlier in the month before going on to lose 2-1 and it was a repeat this time around at Victoria Road.

John Still made two changes from the 1-0 loss at Wycombe last weekend with Gavin Hoyte and Brian Woodall making way for Billy Bingham and Jake Reed.

But it was a lacklustre start from both teams as goalkeeper Barry Roche and Chris Lewington were rarely called into action.

The first effort of note saw Kevin Ellison drilling a shot straight at the home keeper after nine minutes.

On the 20-minute mark Reed beat the offside trap and found himself baring down on goal only to find Sam Williams who fired an effort wide.

The Shrimps did have the ball in the back of the net when Nick Fenton headed home a free-kick but referee James Linnington adjudged that the defender had fouled one of his opposite number.

And to end a dire half, Williams neatly controlled a Femi Ilesanmi ball into him on the edge of the area but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.

The second period didn’t start any better but the Daggers found the opener after 61 minutes when Matt Saunders’ free-kick was headed home by Luke Wilkinson for his fifth of the season.

That proved to be the spark that ignited the game and suddenly there were chances at both ends.

Two minutes later a lovely crossfield ball from Saunders saw Roche just beat Bingham to the ball.

But his clearance fell straight to Medy Elito just in the Morecambe half and an audacious effort went narrowly wide.

Ellison continued to be the main threat going forward for Jim Bentley’s side, but he saw another goalbound effort saved by Lewington.

However Morecambe got themselves the equaliser with nine minutes remaining with a fine effort from Stewart Drummond which nestled into the back of the net with little Lewington could do to stop that.

Just two minutes later Morecambe were in front when Ryan Williams neatly controlled the ball in the box and turned goalwards to fire left footed past Lewington and give the Shrimps all three points.

And with what proved to be the last kick of the game Howell dragged his shot wide across goal to condemn Daggers to their second successive loss.

Unused substitutes: Seabright, Scott, Maher, Hoyte, Caprice.

Attendance: 1,370 (48 Morecambe fans)
