Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett insists any decision over whether striker Rhys Murphy stays with the League Two club is in the hands of the board.

League One side Barnsley made a bid last week for Murphy, who topped the Daggers scoring charts with 13 goals last season, but the Victoria Road outfit rejected it.

The former Arsenal youngster has only a year left on his contract, though, and a decision must be made whether to cash in on the 23-year-old now, or potentially lose him for a smaller fee in January, or nothing at the end of the season.

Burnett would love to see Murphy sign a new deal with Daggers, but knows the striker has ambition to play at a higher level.

“The bid from Barnsley wasn’t acceptable,” said Burnett.

“The only thing on Rhys’ mind at the moment is his recovery from injury and getting back playing.

“The recovery is coming along well and hopefully in the next couple of weeks he will be back in full training.

“The board would have to make the decision over whether to keep him. I would like to keep him, but you can’t stop anyone from wanting to play at a higher level.”
