New signing Matt Partridge is relishing the challenge at Daggers, and is already keen to extend his stay with the club, writes Colin Munford.

The 20-year-old, who can play anywhere across the back line and in midfield, was released by Championship side Reading at the end of last season without making a first-team appearance.

But boss Wayne Burnett has seen enough to offer him the chance in League Two on a one-year deal, and he doesn’t want to let his new manager down, having heard good things about the club from former Daggers loanee Lawson D’Ath.

“I am going to have to work hard with it being a one-year deal and it keeps me hungry,” said Partridge. “I’m going to have to kick on quickly to earn myself a new deal.

“I have known Lawson for a little while. He spoke highly of the club so signing here was never a problem for me.”

He was swiftly brought into action for his new club, featuring in last Tuesday’s 1-0 friendly defeat at Maidstone United.

And though he hadn’t met his new team-mates he was just happy to get going.
“They all seem like good lads and they’ve made me feel welcome and it was good to get a game in alongside them so early on,” he added.

“I have been doing a bit of pre-season training at Basingstoke, but I need to get up to speed.

“It was good to get involved straight away and get a game under my belt. I am looking forward to getting up to training with the boys.”

Partridge had off the field problems at Reading, and has a 12-month suspended jail sentence after admitting a single charge of assault causing actual bodily harm in August 2013.

But the youngster is keen to enjoy a fresh start with the Daggers.

“I am looking to move on from that now and progress with my footballing career,” he added.
