Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett believed the 3-0 scoreline flattered Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Tuesday.

James Dunne’s goal had the hosts in front at the break, before a second-half penalty from Jed Wallace and Andy Barcham’s late strike sealed the defeat for the Daggers.

Both goals in the second period came after midfielder Andre Boucaud had been sent off for two bookable offences, and Burnett felt the former York City man was harshly treated by referee Carl Berry.

“I don’t know what the first yellow is for and I don’t know what the second one is for either,” said Burnett.

“It is a foul, but is it a yellow card? Come on he is 35-40 yards away from our goal and I think they have clashed.

“There is no intent there, he has tried to win the ball.

“Is it a foul because he has left a trailing leg? Yes maybe, but it is a poor decision in my opinion.”

The Daggers boss admitted it was always going to be tough from that point on, and felt Pompey did a ‘professional job’ on his side when they had the numerical advantage.

“I thought we played very well in the first half and I thought we had dominated the game at that point,” added Burnett.

“They had one shot and it is a goal and the other chance was cleared away by our goalkeeper.

“I thought we were in total control of the game. All right we haven’t created that many opportunities, but I didn’t think we were in any danger.

“We had the ball with 10 men, but to be fair, we weren’t threatening them in any shape or form.

“They put men behind the ball and did a professional job on us.”

With the score at 1-0, Ashley Chambers struck the bar for the Daggers, and Burnett believes they have got to start converting more chances.

He added: “We are having large chunks of the game, but we need to convert our possession into goalscoring opportunities.”
