Dagenham & Redbridge boss says wind played a huge part in defeat at U’s

Dagenham & Redbridge boss John Still says there were positives to take from their 1-0 loss at Cambridge United.

Joe Worrall fouled Josh Simpson in the 82nd minute, allowing U’s captain Luke Berry to score the game’s only goal from the spot.

It was a rare entertaining moment in a game that was affected by the blustery weather, and Still believes both teams struggled to get to grips with the wind.

“The result’s not good and the conditions weren’t great for both teams, but if I look at from when I came in there’s still progress,” he said.

“I thought our back four were very good, somewhat thrown together because of Justin Hoyte’s fiance going into labour, but the two young lads at centre back did brilliant.

“It was a little bit of inexperience from Joe to concede the penalty, but I was quite encouraged.”

The game looked to be heading for a goalless draw before Worrall, who had done well prior to the incident, clumsily tripped Simpson in the box.

And Still says Daggers can have no complaints about referee Carl Boyeson’s decision to point to the spot.

“It’s one of those, he caught it but it’s two people colliding. His leg was out, I’m not going to argue about the penalty. Some give it, other wouldn’t, but I’m just going to accept it.”
