Dagenham & Redbridge boss wants team to use impressive midweek display at starting point for good run
John Still is not allowing himself to get carried away by Dagenham & Redbridge’s midweek display ahead of their crucial game against League Two relegation rivals York City tomorrow (Saturday).
Daggers ended a run of five straight defeats with a goalless draw at Notts County on Tuesday to draw within seven points of Hartlepool United in 22nd.
The visitors to Meadow Lane could count themselves a touch unfortunate not to take all three points in the closing minutes, with Matt Richards and Ashley Chambers both hitting the bar.
It was a display that perhaps gave the 81 fans who travelled that Daggers may pull off the great escape and remain in the Football League, but Still refuses to get ahead of himself before the six-pointer against the Minstermen.
“Let’s keep things in perspective, it was an outstanding display at Notts County, but we need another 13 of those performances,” he said. “If we can find those performances, we can find points.”
During the second half on Tuesday, the visitors looked good on the counter attack, breaking quickly into dangerous areas and whipping crosses in as soon as possible down the flanks or shooting if in a central position.
It was a marked improvement from recent weeks when the east Londoners seemingly struggled to to get out of their own half in various matches.
Still will no doubt hope to see that continue against York this weekend, and was pleased to see things they had worked on in training come off.
“We need to keep working and I think the display at County will give us confidence. We’ve drawn, but it’s the way we’ve played,” he added. “We could have been under pressure for 90 minutes and drawn, but we moved the ball much quicker. We’ve worked so hard in training on moving the ball.
