Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett has praised Liam O’Brien ahead of today’s derby with Southend United – with the 23-year-old set to deputise again for Mark Cousins at Victoria Road.

Cousins has been suffering from headaches since his head injury and it is expected this afternoon’s clash will come too soon for the former Colchester United stopper.

O’Brien has impressed since taking over the gloves and helped his team secure six points against Hartlepool United and Tranmere Rovers.

Burnett said: “Liam has great statue, he kicks well and is very vocal. He needs to be playing games because that is the only way he is going to learn, but Mark was doing extremely well before his injury.

“If I was being over critical of Mark I would say that his kicking does let him down a little bit, but he has been excellent in all other areas for us.

“But Liam’s kicking does help us get down the pitch when we are under some pressure so we are going to have healthy competition now.”

It does seem likely Cousins will miss today’s match with concussion affecting him since his injury on March 3.

Another player Burnett has been without recently is captain Abu Ogogo, but he did return to training on Thursday.

But the Victoria Road skipper might miss out this afternoon and Daggers could be unchanged from last weekend’s win at Tranmere.

“Whether or not Abs will be up to scratch is another thing because he has been out for about 10 days now,” added Burnett.

“He missed 12 weeks earlier in the season. I think Southend might be a touch early for him. We will assess him.

“I am not sure if Mark will be available. It has healed quite well, but he also got concussion and has been getting a few headaches at night.

“We sent him to the doctor and he said that is normal with a bang on the head, but the gash was quite big.”
