Scott Doe reflects on Saturday’s loss to Burton at Victoria Road

Dagenham & Redbridge might have been celebrating a famous victory against Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s team had they not conceded so soon after taking the lead. That is the view of experienced defender Scott Doe.

Doe, who made his 251st appearance for the club in the 3-1 defeat to Burton Albion on Saturday, conceded the timing of the goals cost Wayne Burnett’s team.

Burnett wasn’t actually in attendance at Victoria Road, he missed the game through illness and Warren Hackett and Darren Currie took charge.

But Doe refused to use that as an excuse and admitted after Alex Jakubiak’s 67th minute opener, Daggers didn’t hold out long enough.

He said: “It is better to have the manager here. He is the manager on the touchline, but obviously he was ill and there has been a game before where he wasn’t here and we won so it is not an excuse.

“The timing of the goals was the killer for us. We went 1-0 up and they scored four minutes after and then scored shortly afterwards again and it has killed us, but that is why they are where they are in the league.

“If there was a 10-15 minute gap after we scored then you fancy yourself to hold on.

“But they got that goal and the last 15 minutes they got all the momentum and we didn’t hold out so it was disappointing.”

Doe praised Burton after the victory, a win which took them to the top of the division and left the Victoria Road outfit 18th in the table.

The 26-year-old felt Daggers didn’t perform how they had been doing in previous weeks.

“That is what we wanted to do,” responded Doe when asked if they missed a chance to show they aren’t too far away from being able to challenge for the play-offs.

“And that is why people are a bit gutted we didn’t do what we have been doing. We have been playing really well away and we wanted to bring it back home and we didn’t do it.

“Burton are a good side, but we just didn’t do what we have been doing in recent weeks, which has got us these good results.

“The table doesn’t lie. They are under a good manager and have good staff and good players. They were organised.

“But we can’t let it get to us too much because we have been on a good run lately so we need to keep it going.”
