Joe Widdowson is pleased to be able to link up with friend and former West Ham United team mate Zavon Hines.

The 25-year-old joined Dagenham & Redbridge on loan until January 4 from Bury at the end of November and has settled in well at Victoria Road.

The switch to Wayne Burnett’s side has allowed the defender to reunite with the talented Hines.

And Widdowson is happy the Daggers winger is getting closer to full fitness after spending the last nine months out injured.

“Me and Zav go back to our youth team days at West Ham so I have known him a long time, over 10 years now,” he added.

“He is a good mate of mine. It is good to see Zav back because he has had a difficult time with injuries.

“Like any player he wants to be out there playing and that is when he is happiest, with a ball at his feet and doing his thing.

“Everyone is hoping Zav can make a full recovery soon and the Dagenham fans and all the players and staff are looking forward to seeing him back out on the pitch.”

Widdowson had to wait two weeks to make his debut for the club, coming on in the 61st minute during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

He was forced to wait for his league bow due to being ineligible against his parent club, Bury, and Daggers not having a game on December 6.

The former West Ham youngster revealed it was a positive to have the break, he added: “It has been good because I came here with a bit of an injury.

“I managed to get fit and get a few training sessions in and get used to how the gaffer wants to play and what he expects from me.

“I got injured in Morecambe’s game against York City on October 21.

“And since then I have been back at Bury and receiving treatment for about a month.

“I came here with a little injury, but that is all clear now so I am feeling better and it is all good.”
