Burnett discussed the performance of Jodi Jones and Luke Howell, who was sent off for a second consecutive match
Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett praised the performance of youngster Jodi Jones after he helped inspire a 2-1 victory over Waltham Abbey in the Essex Senior Cup.
Goals in either half from Jones and Rhys Murphy helped Daggers progress past the Ryman North outfit and into the quarter-finals of the competition.
It was an eventful evening at Victoria Road, though, with three red cards handed out and two penalties awarded.
Murphy scored his first spot kick before having another saved in the 90th minute, whilst Luke Howell was sent off for a lunging challenge on the Abbotts defender Matthew Attard midway through the second period.
But it was the individual display of Jones that stole the show in the entertaining fourth round tie.
The youth team player scored a stunning solo goal in the 15th minute, flicking the ball past his marker before driving into the box and finishing confidently.
He also smashed another effort against the crossbar after the break and was a constant threat all evening.
Burnett was impressed, he said: “Yes Jodi done very well. He is a youth team player and he has come in against Waltham Abbey.
“He has been given an opportunity and he has taken it with both hands.
“This competition gives some people an opportunity to get a run out, people have got 90 minutes under their belt so we are pleased about that.”
Howell’s red card was a negative from the evening but it will only rule him out from competing in non-first team matches.
Therefore he will only be suspended from three Essex Senior Cup games and the dismissal won’t add to his current suspension after his sending off at Southport last week.
“No it doesn’t affect his league suspension,” revealed Burnett.
“It probably means he won’t participate in this competition again, but hopefully we can get through the next round but he probably won’t be involved.”
