Pre-season friendly: Dagenham & Redbridge 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Trialist Christian Doidge’s second-half goal proved in vain as Daggers ended their pre-season campaign with a home defeat to a youthful Spurs XI at Victoria Road.

Doidge headed home Ashley Hemmings’ cross to reduce the deficit after Jonathan Obika had given Ugo Ehiogu’s side a first-half lead, which was added to by Cristian Ceballos’ penalty.

George Porter started for the Daggers, while Doidge and former academy man Kurtis Pykes were on the bench.

The youthful Spurs side included England under-21 international Tom Carroll and after a quiet five minutes it was the Premier League side who created the first opening through the lively Joshua Onomah, but he was well denied by home goalkeeper Liam O’Brien.

You could certainly see the Spurs side didn’t lack any confidence, spraying the ball from side to side.

And it was Onomah again who looked like getting a shot on goal inside the box, however, Brian Saah got the faintest of touches to put it behind for a corner.

The hosts didn’t look too bad either, playing some nice football up until the final third.

Jack Connors started one move at left back, though when the ball eventually found Porter, his pull back was cleared by the visitors.

Jonathan Obika tried his luck from 20 yards but O’Brien was equal to the effort, tipping it behind for another corner.

Tom Carroll was anonymous for large parts but almost put the visitors in front after Oduwa pulled the ball back for the midfielder but his curling effort was just off target.

It was certainly an action-packed end to the half as Spurs took the lead two minutes before the break when Connors was dispossessed just inside his own half and Cristian Ceballos pounced.

He paced away from several attempted tackles before O’Brien kept out the initial effort only for Obika to slot home the rebound.

Daggers almost levelled on the stroke of half time when a corner from the right was headed goalwards by skipper Abu Ogogo, but it glanced off the far post.

The hosts started brightly after the break and Jamie Cureton rattled the crossbar from 25 yards after finding time and space.

But the visitors doubled their lead on 66 minutes when Ceballos’ trickery saw him upended by Connors in the box and referee Darren Deadman pointed to the spot.

Ceballos stepped up to take the penalty and though his dinked effort was initially saved by Mark Cousins, he tapped in the rebound.

Daggers did pull one back with a good all-round move as Hemmings was found down the left and his chipped cross into the box found Doidge unmarked at the back post and he headed past Voss.

And try as they may, the hosts couldn’t’ force an equaliser despite Souleymane Coulibaly’s long-range effort testing Cousins in the Daggers goal.

Daggers: O’Brien (Cousins 63), Batt (Shields 81), Doe, Saah, Connors, Howell, Ogogo, Chambers, Porter (Pykes 46), Cureton (Doidge 63), Hemmings (Goldberg 81).

Unused substitutes: Nouble

Spurs XI: Voss, Sonupe, Lesniak, Carroll, Ball, McQueen, Ceballos, Winks, Obika, Onomah (Coulibaly 73), Oduwa (Miller 63).
