Dagenham & Redbridge fell to a second straight defeat as they suffered a 2-1 loss in their top of table clash against Sutton United.

An early goal from Corey Whitely was cancelled out by an equaliser from striker Craig Dundas on the stroke of half-time and a late winner from Kenny Davis secured the three points for the visitors and knocked Daggers down to eighth at Victoria Road.

Daggers made two changes to the line-up for the match as Ben Nunn and Elliot Romain both found themselves back in the starting eleven in place of Jake Howells and the injured Luke Pennell as they looked to bounce back from their first defeat in the National League season to Hartlepool United.

The first chance of the match fell to Sutton’s Dundas in the first minute as he had a shot on goal from just outside the box that forced Mark Cousins to make a save.

Whitely was then brought down and awarded a free-kick just to the right of the box in the 10th minute. The winger swung a cross in, but it was cleared by the Sutton defence.

Whitely once again got on the ball and sent it down the pitch for Romain to run onto as he made a great run down the right flank, but eventually Aswad Thomas caught him and cleared for a corner.

Whitley broke the deadlock when he slotted into the bottom left corner after Romain held up the ball, outmuscled Louis John, turned and sent him through on goal to make it 1-0 in the 21st minute.

Sutton came close to an equaliser when a long throw in found Tommy Wright in the middle of the box and he headed it just inches over the bar ten minutes later.

In the 42nd minute Daggers captain Craig Robson put his body on the line to deny a shot on goal from Davis on edge of the six yard box.

But Dundas scored his 100th goal for Sutton as he hooked home a bouncing ball inside the box after Kwame Thomas whipped the ball in to bring the score level a minute before half-time.

The second half was a stalemate for the first ten minutes with neither side wanting to make a mistake.

Thomas struck the ball from outside the box, but it was comfortably held by Cousins in the 59th minute.

And it was straight back down the other end as Whitely surged down the middle on the counter attack and picked out Morgan Ferrier on his right but he couldn’t hit the target and sent the ball well wide.

New signing Chike Kandi nearly made a huge impact with one of his first touches as he lost his marker Simon Downer, but had his shot blocked off the line by Louis John, before Howells sent the rebound over the bar in the 71st minute.

Six minutes later Kandi sent a header just inches wide from a Whitely corner and the game went quiet until Sutton nicked a late winner when Kenny Davis headed home a cross in the 91st minute.
