Essex Senior League: Barking expect a tough test against lowly Sporting Bengal United

Blues visit struggling United this weekend
Barking’s joint-player/manager Glen Golby says he expects a tough test against Sporting Bengal United on Saturday, despite the sides being at opposite ends of the Essex Senior League table.
While the Blues currently lead the way, their east London rivals are precariously positioned near the bottom ahead of the weekend’s clash.
But Golby believes that will count for little come Saturday, and points towards some difficult cup clashes for the Mayesbrook Park club against Bengal already this campaign.
“We’ve played Sporting Bengal in the cups a couple of times this season and those games haven’t been as easy as some people might think,” he said.
“They have the ability to be a good side on their day and have brought in Steve Carvell, who is a quality player.
“We can’t be complacent. We have struggled at Mile End Stadium in recent years, but hopefully we can win and open up a gap over Clapton.”
Barking certainly know they have the firepower to down Sporting Bengal as they boast one of the best attacks not just in their league, but in the whole of non-league football.
A 5-3 win at home to Takeley, which saw Barking return to the top of the table, took them past 90 goals for the season and into the top 10 for most goals scored in non-league this season — above neighbours Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Blues were able to add further goals to their tally on Tuesday night as they pocketed a 3-0 away to Basildon United at the Stuart Bingham Stadium.
And while Golby is pleased his attack is being recognised on a national scale, he believes they should have had even more.
“It is pleasing to be among the top 10 scorers across the whole of non-league football, but with the number of chances we’ve missed we could have had over 100!” he added.
“I won’t grumble too much as we’ll go past that before the end of the season, and we know we have to keep scoring if we want to win the title.”
