Essex Senior League: Barking hope to sting Basildon United

Blues look to pocket success at Stuart Bingham Stadium
Barking joint-player/manager Glen Golby expects tonight’s (Tuesday) opponents in the Essex Senior League, Basildon United, to be buoyed by a good win on Saturday.
While the Blues were beating Takeley 5-3 to return to the top of the table, the Bees stung Ilford 3-1 at Cricklefield.
It was a first win in three games in all competitions for United, and Golby believes that makes them a more difficult proposition at the Stuart Binhgam Stadium tonight.
“Basildon had a great win on Saturday and not many teams have done that to Ilford this season,” he said.
“From the reports we’ve got, we understand Basildon were quite convincing winners, so their tails will be up and we have to approach the game in the right frame of mind.”
When the sides met at the end of November at Mayesbrook Park, Barking were held to a 1-1 draw despite a goal from Omari Delgado.
But Golby has pinpointed where the Blues need to improve tonight if they are to get the victory this time around.
“When we faced Basildon earlier in the season, we were sloppy in possession and we didn’t make the most of our chances,” added Golby.
“If we take the lead tonight, we can’t go kamikaze like we have done in some games recently.
“What I mean by that is we get an early goal and then seem intent on racking the goals up quickly rather than remain focussed on the task of winning first.”
Barking will also be on the lookout for a first clean sheet in four league games tonight as they bid to tighten up at the back.
And Golby his team’s recent defensive struggles are down to the entire and not just the Blues’ back four.
“We had a good defence before the start of 2017, but the last three games have been poor from the whole team, not just the back four,” said the defender.
“The players know that and it is something we are looking to address because we know if we can keep teams out, we have more than enough firepower to win.”
