The Tottenham midfielder spoke to London24 after the 3-2 defeat against Holland

The new England skipper Scott Parker was as surprised as anyone to be leading his country out at Wembley last night.

Speaking exclusively to London24, Parker said: “I was a very proud man tonight to be England captain.

“I was surprised to get the nod - I only found out at 10.15am this morning. I’m no different to anyone else in that respect, I’m delighted.”

Speaking about England’s chances in the summer, Parker, knowing that there are just two friendlies before the big kick-off was in optimistic but pragmatic about the Three Lions’ chances.

“It’s going to be difficult but tonight showed that as Holland are a very good team,” he added.

“But England is a work in progress, and we have to keep working hard.

“There is still plenty of preparation to do and we have to work at it, but I believe we will go into the tournament in good stead.

Parker will miss Spurs’ next game against Manchester United on Sunday after being sent off against in the 5-2 defeat to Arsenal last weekend at the Emirates.
