Barking & Dagenham under-11s opened their Essex Finch Cup campaign with a well deserved 2-1 win over Newham thanks to a goal in each half from Jaqwaan Williams and Joe Martin.

Newham had lost only once this season and began well, but Samson Uwandu’s shot failed to trouble Brandon Dean.

Amin Karim’s header from Harry Milburn’s corner was cleared off the line by Emmanuel Olutunji, with Martin heading wide from the corner.

And Millburn went close from a 25-yard free-kick, before Favour Fawunmi drew a smart save from Hazeez Oluwu with a swerving effort.

Newham went close when a long ball released Uwandu, but Qudus Onajobi got back to make a vital block, and the home side took the lead when Emis Gasperavicius showed great pace to get behind the defence and cross for Williams, who swapped passes with his team-mate and slotted a low shot home.

Karim went close with a dipping volley, before Mason Stanton’s crossfield pass released Gasperavicius and his first-time cross flew just beyond Karim.

The hosts were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and extended their lead when Martin smashed a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner of the net, with Olowu rooted to the spot.

Tyler Rice got down well to deny Modestas Kalinavskas a reply, while Fawunmi went close to a third for Barking & Dagenham with a rasping drive from 20 yards.

And Charlie Rich cleared a dangerous cross from Kalinavaskas, before Williams was crowded out at the other end.

Newham finally breached the home defence late on when a low cross from Jerome Thomas found Uwandu, who bundled the ball home.

But Barking & Dagenham held on for an impressive win and only need to avoid defeat in their final group game against Havering to progress to the knockout stages.

Barking & Dagenham: Onajobi (Becontree), Karim (Parsloes), Gasperavicius (W Bellamy), Williams, Martin, Rich (Valence), Fawunmi (Hunters Hall), Stanton (Eastbury), Dean (Dorothy Barley), Millburn (Five Elms).
