Men aged 50 and over are determined to prove you’re never too old to play sport when they participate in the Essex FA’s ‘Walking Football’ Tournament at Chelmsford Sports & Athletics Centre on Thursday (September 11).

As seen on TV recently, walking football is a non-contact sport, with no age limit, and this new version of the game has proved to be a popular means of keeping fit, learning new skills, having fun and socialising - all at the same time.

It has largely the same rules as normal small-sided football with one main exception - there’s no running or jogging... just walking!

Five-a-side games will be played at an indoor venue from 12-3pm in Salerno Way, near Melbourne Park, and teams are welcome to come along, as well as individuals who can be put into teams for the day.

Further information on local teams and sessions will be available for anyone who would like to pursue walking football further.

The game is often played by people who enjoy football but can’t run around, maybe because of health or mobility issues.

All the skills are exactly the same, just without the running. In match scenarios, if the referee perceives a player to be breaking out into a jog, a free kick is awarded against the offender. All the games are played in a jovial, informal atmosphere.

There is a simple set of rules for the tournament. Running is forbidden at all times - both on and off the ball - and a direct free kick will be conceded if a player runs.

Five players per team can be on the pitch at any one time - four outfield players and a goalkeeper. The duration of the games will be ten minutes one way, with no limit to the amount of rolling substitutions allowed.

Throw-ins will be ‘kick ins’ from the floor and there is no offside rule.

To attend this event, simply download the booking form from essexfa.com and return it to Ian Bent as soon as possible (hard copies are also available).

Ian can be contacted via 01245 393094 or ian.bent@essexfa.com.

Highlights from the day will be shared on Twitter @EssexCountyFA and grassroots football news and information can also be found by searching for ‘EssexFootball’ on Facebook.
