WELWYN Wheelers cyclist Laura Trott proved why she is one of Britain’s brightest young sport stars by winning a bronze in the omnium at the UCI World Cup in London to follow her golden run and world record in the team pursuit.

The reigning team pursuit world champion dazzled the 6,000-strong crowd over two days particularly with her gutsy performance to win the elimination race, one of the six disciplines in cycling’s answer to the decathlon.

Trott, 19, remains focussed on the team pursuit, but could now mount a double medal bid at London 2012 Olympic Games after she pushed the world champion, Canada’s Tara Whitten, into fourth place.

At the World Cup competition, which doubled up as an Olympic test event, she said: “I wanted to get a medal but it probably wasn’t expected.

“I believe I can beat these girls but I did this off the back of team pursuit training - I don’t do any training at all for this.

“But it’s a really tough event mentally to keep yourself motivated for every race.

“If you have a rubbish event like I did (the points race) it’s so hard to get your head back in the game when you’re thinking I’ve now got to go into another event lying eighth when I wanted to be in a medal position.

“There wasn’t much to make up to get gold (two points) but the points race let me down.

“I was too conservative and didn’t get stuck in to the early sprints at all so I’m going to look at that and see what I can do.”

Trott was quick to thank the fans for the part they played in pushing her on throughout the omnium.

“The crowd helped massively particularly for my elimination race win.

“Normally when you are at the back I tend to think: ‘Oh, I’m not going to get round them, I’ll give up now.’

“But because they were cheering me on so loudly it was do or die.

“They were loving it so I tried a bit harder.

“And I got 1,500 more followers on twitter last night so it can’t have been that bad.”

Trott’s exploits in the omnium were even more unexpected as they followed Friday night’s blistering world record performance alongside Dani King and Joanna Rowsell.

“It was really hard coming back after the team pursuit final,” she added.

“I felt terrible and nearly didn’t qualify for the omnium - it was only the crowd that got me through.”
