Walthamstow fighter beats Armenian Arman Yeremyan at the ExCel
Lutalo Muhammad claimed a bronze medal in the men’s -80kg taekwondo competition, defeating Arman Yeremyan of Armenia at the ExCel this evening.
Following his loss against Nicolas Garcia in the quarter-finals, the 21-year-old from Walthamstow beat Iranian Yousef Karami 11-7 thanks to a third-round flurry in his repechage contest, setting up the bronze meadl match against Yeremyan.
It was Muhammad who took an early lead against his Armenia counterpart, landing a head-kick in the first 30 seconds of the first round, eventually winning the opening two minutes 4-1.
Yeremyan got a point back early in the second round, but Muhammad’s talent soon shone through as he connected with another head-kick, taking a 9-2 lead into the third and final round.
Despite the Armenian attacking throughout the final two minutes, Muhammad did more than enough in defence, as a final score of 9-3 secured the east Londoner a deserved bronze medal.
