Millwall legend Neil Harris missed out on scoring a goal against his beloved Lions but his Southend side were beaten.
The south Londoners took the lead when Chris Taylor headed home James Henry’s cross.
And they grabbed their second moments later when Dany N’Guessan fired home after the Shrimpers’ defence switched off.
Harris had his first chance from the spot but Maik Taylor saved his effort.
But he provided an assist for John Spicer to reduce the gap to one and Harris nearly had his strike but it was chalked off for offside.
