Handball club split double-header

Olympia HC experienced mixed fortunes as the new handball season got underway at Barking’s Sporthouse.

The women started the defence of their Super 8 title with a 27-23 win over London GD.

But the men began their campaign with a 28-26 defeat against their London GD rivals, the defending champions, in the second half of the double header.

Defence specialist Gosia Darmaszek shone early on for Olympia’s women, but they fell 3-1 down before Diana Surubaru picked up the first yellow card of the match.

Debutant Marie Lejeune also received a two-minute suspension but the visitors could not take advantage and Olympia’s Helen Andersson was then brought down from behind on an attack and London’s Aleksandra Garaloska was shown a red card after only 13 minutes.

The penalty was saved by Frida Ekstrand but Olympia found some momentum to move 14-12 up by half time.

Surubaru scored an early goal at the start of the second half, while Sabrina Farhan replaced Petra Mlcohova in Olympia’s net.

Linda Bourkab converted her fourth penalty before London called a timeout, then Camilla Grasso netted her first goal for Olympia.

A giveaway by Andra Rosu was punished by London, who closed the gap to two goals, but Olympia rallied to clinch victory as Diana Ciubotaru was named player of the game.

Olympia (goals in brackets): Farhan, Mlcohova, Ekstrand, Lejeune (4), Rosu, Ekler (1), Grasso (1), Draghici (2), Bourkab (8), Mirghis, Darmaszek, Andersson, Surubaru (4), Ciubotaru (7).

Olympia’s men fielded six debutants and soon behind as London scored swiftly.

Frustrated coach Gabriel Gradinaru was shown a yellow card, but Tomas Balanosis opened Olympia’s account before London moved 7-1 up.

After a timeout, Olympia regrouped and trailed 13-9 at half time, with Marian Oana scoring a fine goal after the restart.

Ionut Toma saved a London penalty but Olympia’s joy was shortlived as the visitors scored off a fast break and extended their advantage.

Adrian Burdun missed a penalty after Przemek Platek was fouled in the act of shooting, while debutant Antonio Rodrigues was denied as Olympia came up two goals short of their rivals.

Oleg Bartashchuk took the player of the game award for Olympia.

Olympia: Skipirzepa, Toma, Cholewa (2), Bucur, Bartashchuk (7), Oana (5), Burdun (1), Rodriguez, Grigorie, Cieslak, Platek (4), Balanosis (1), Burdun (1), Ezzaouche, Nakimovitch, Diallo.
