Nicola Adams says she “feels like an unstoppable force” after winning another gold medal at the Stranjda Cup in Bulgaria at the weekend.

The 29-year-old flyweight, who is registered with Haringey Police ABC, has already won the EU Championships and the European Championships in the past year.

And Adams’ latest triumph included a victory over the world No1, China’s Ren Cancan, strengthening her bid for the biggest gold medal of all at London 2012.

“It was definitely more important to beat her than to win the trophy,” said Adams, who will move from No3 to No2 in the world at 51kg when the updated rankings are released.

“She was going to be my goal for the Olympic qualifiers, but I’ve beaten her early and that only adds to my belief that I can do something special at the Olympics.

“We’ve got another tournament in the Czech Republic in five weeks time, the Grand Prix, and then it’s the Olympic qualifiers in China in May.

“Winning these tournaments is helping a lot. I’m seeing the improvement of being with the Great Britain squad full-time every time I fight now.

“This is a big year and confidence is so important. I used to win silver medals but I’m turning silver into gold now. I feel like an unstoppable force at the moment.”

Adams faced Bulgaria’s Stoyka Petrova in the preliminary round of the Stranjda Cup at the weekend, losing the first round 4-2 but fighting back to win 10-8.

That set up a crunch clash with the world No1 Cancan, and the pair went into the final round tied at 9-9 – but it was Adams who triumphed 12-11.

The semi-final was much less tense as the Great Britain boxer breezed past Turkey’s Derya Aktop 17-3 – and the final was equally emphatic as Adams beat Valeria Calabrese 17-5, delivering a series of head shots in the final round and giving the Italian a standing eight-count.
