Dagenham coach discusses win over Mavericks and this weekend’s clash with Bancroft

Dagenham coach Mark Collins praised his new look team after they defeated Shpeherd Neame Essex Merit Division Seven outfit Mavericks last weekend in the President’s Shield.

D’s scored six tries, with Chris Rawlinson, Dave Kitenge, Billy Davies, Billy Nelson and Lee Dyer all crossing over alongside a penalty try in the 39-17 win.

Collins’ team entertain Bancroft in Essex One on Saturday and he said: “We go into it with our eyes wide open, looking to concentrate on defence and structurally moving the ball in the right areas of the pitch.

“Bancroft have had a few ups and downs this year. We have a different side now to what faced them before when we won 56-37.

“But we had plenty of positives this week and they outweigh the negatives.”

D’s victory against Mavericks has boosted spirit at the club and Collins is pleased with their progress.

He is also looking forward to the quarter-final clash, which will be against either May & Bakers or Upper Clapton.

“We have been nurturing this team for three or four weeks now,” he added.

“Our defence was decent on Saturday and we had more control. I was happy with how things went.

“The kicking game wasn’t too bad, even if Lee Dyer’s kicking was a bit off and we were quite dominant in the pack, which makes a change.

“We lost three or four players before the game again, though, this time through illness. A sickness bug has gone through the camp, but I was able to field a proper team of backs this week and not have a 52-year-old on the wing.

“I think we are in the quarter’s now and we play Bakers or Upper Clapton next and they are doing a double header on February 28.

“The winner of that will take the league points and get through to face us in the quarter-finals so I can’t wait.”
