Dagenham had to field club chairman Gary Knowlden, 52, in their Essex One clash against Pegasus Palmerians last weekend and suffered a heavy away defeat.

D’s were beaten 55-5 at St Clere’s School, with Billy Nelson scoring their solitary try, but coach Mark Collins was not helped prior to kick-off by finding out he was missing several players.

“I rung up the chairman before and said ‘I haven’t got a 15’ so he put his boots on and we stuck him on the wing,” said Collins.

“You can’t have three players cry off on the morning of a game can you?

“One lad got lost, one had a three-hour delay on a flight back from New York so I can’t do anything about that, and another had a sickness bug, so we didn’t do bad for what we had rearranged.”

D’s host Shepherd Neame Essex Merit Division Seven team Mavericks this weekend in the President’s Shield and Collins wants a response.

He added: “We should have enough against them. They are now a senior side, but they were a team that broke away from Upminster and were based in Brentwood.

“I don’t know too much about them, but I imagine they will be young and move the ball well and we are a team on the rebuild.”
