Dagenham coach Mark Collins has been forced to rebuild his squad halfway through the Essex One season, but he is keeping spirits lifted at Central Park.

D’s lost 36-5 to Ilford Wanderers at the weekend and go to Pegasus Palmerians on Saturday looking for a win to add confidence to the camp.

“We go to Pegasus and they are a battling side fighting down the wrong end of the table,” said Collins.

“They got four tries against us last time out when we beat them (31-24).

“I am sure the rumours would have gone around the league so they should have their tails up. But I’m looking for us to nick a win here and there until the end of the season, so hopefully we can at Pegasus on Saturday.”

Various senior players have departed Dagenham over the past few months to join rival league teams.

Collins admits his team cannot compete with what is being offered elsewhere, but is pleased the dismantling of the team has happened now.

He added: “The boys that have left haven’t been asked to leave – they have left by their own accord.

“I am quite happy it has happened now and not in the summer because I can work with the people I have got and look to add more at the end of the season.”

D’s have strengthened their team by bringing in some imports, though, and Collins is pleased with their progress.

“There is a bit of a language barrier at the moment,” he added. “But the beauty of the Lithuanian boys I have brought in is they want a home, they want somewhere to belong and they want to train week in, week out.”

Although beaten by Ilford last weekend, Collins was able to take positives, not least their response after the break as they battled back to score a try through Chris Rawlinson.

He said: “We knew we had to contend with a big pack from Ilford and that destroyed us in the end really.

“We were 19 points down at half time, but we battled on and came out second half and did well getting a try. But I’ve got no complaint with the result in the end.”
